'A sunrise, like art, is not there to be understood. Yet the full presence of it can be a mysterious affirmation to those watching and listening silently. In all her art, Gabriella Lewenz seeks to share such elemental experiences alone with earth, sea, air and sky. “Whispers at Dawn” attempts to capture not just the dawn light on sea and land, but the feelings of the senses brushed alert by whispering wind and the sudden arrival of intense belonging.'

I use hand made oils on canvas, glass and timber, rendering layers of rich coloured pigment. My paintings are evocative of the primal forces of earth, sea and sky exploring the power of the feminine.

My studio practice comes from what Maori call 'Kore' - the unorganized potential, the place of chaos and randomness. Moving my paintings around the studio floor, combining, removing, layering, searching for new combinations giving me a starting point of 'place'.

I delve in and search for hiddend relationships, rendering layers, thick and washed, working with the light, colour, and shadow until a sequence unfolds, creating a series of lyrical forms. Many of the works contain visual messages. They speak to the fundemental levels of our being - material, energetic, emotional and spiritual.

The Oceans, the Sacred Waters and the iconic Greek Amphora are three central symbols I call upon when I begin.
